CIA: Sorry America, the dog ate our interrogation vids
Surprised? You shouldn't be because this "dog ate my homework" excuse has been deployed every time our government has some MAJOR explaining to do. Iran Contra--don't remember. Valerie Plame leak: don't remember. Millions of dollars in Iraq reconstruction: what's a contract? You can bet your bottom dollar when our civil rights get completely lost in this endless war on terror, they'll most certainly say they forgot where they put them.
The unprecedented claims to executive privileges made by this administration could possibly be understood if it were accountable for its actions. It is not. Executive privilege is just that: a privilege—one that must be earned. Unconstitutional spying, outing the very agents fighting the war on terror, lying about WMD in two oil-rich countries, and now deleting INTERROGATIONS of so-called terror suspects (what about the intelligence gained from these?)—all this does nothing to gain our trust. In fact, these are huge red flags that this administration is not on the level.
What is going on? Bill Clinton was impeached merely for cheating on his wife. You'd think the Dems would at least have an axe to grind. Instead, congress, and most candidates for president, have deemed it inappropriate to pursue impeachment, or censure, or any form of rebuke in the slightest against our history's most blatantly corrupt administrations. Instead, they gave it carte blanche to violate our civil liberties, and wage wars based on greed and spurious suspicions! Whose interest does that serve?
Think twice next time they try to sign our rights away, if by then you're even allowed to think.
