Don't dismiss state's motto; it's still relevant

by David Rowe, Amherst • 10/08/03

I cannot believe The Telegraph's comment about the state's motto.

You editorialized, "The state's motto, 'Live Free or Die,' is a stirring one, but most of us who endure the daily grind to make do know it shouldn't be taken literally."

Maybe you haven't lived away from here for long enough to really enjoy what we have here.

I was raised on Long Island, and then spent a decade or so in North Carolina among my travels.

I can tell you that the motto is still heard and followed here in New Hampshire compared to other places I have been.

While living in North Carolina and doing research as to where to move to, I researched many different places nationally and internationally. New Hampshire won.

I moved here 5 ½ years ago to raise my new family.

One of the main reasons I came was the fact that individuals can have a great influence in their local governments here.

And the choice of which town to live in can make a giant difference in how you live and raise your family as opposed to other places where entire regions are homogenized into cookie- cutter towns attached to one greater area.

My daily grind takes me to Massachusetts for work, but I would never move there.

As for the Libertarians, they are welcome to come.

I agree with many of their views, but believe some are not attainable in the near term.

I personally think that if more people were exposed to their views they may just be converted.

I believe New Hampshire is just the type of place they are looking for. I am sure that if they can get even half of there proposed amount to move here they will be able to affect great change here in this state.

The people in New Hampshire do not seem to be as closed minded as people in other areas, yet they stubbornly stick to what already works unless real proof is given that a change should be made.
