Welcome from NH Residents

Welcome from NH Residents

(If you are a NH resident and would like to submit a welcome message to the FSP, please send us an email).

  1. I chose NH for my home in the 1980s for the same reason that the FSP chose it last year: "That government is best which governs least." Thus I say, "Welcome, FSP! What took you so long?" – Bill Alleman, Weare, NH, 6/22/04

  2. I moved to NH in 1979. Having grown up in Chicago I appreciated the less intrusive government here. Over the years I have seen a movement towards more intrusive government in NH. I welcome the FSP members as allies and potential friends. – Tony Lekas, Hudson, NH, 6/22/04

  3. We gave a lot of thought in choosing the best state for the FSP. After all was said and done we realized, we already lived there. The FSP will be a great addition to New Hampshire. – Tom Kershaw, Merrimack, NH, 6/22/04

  4. As a native of this fine state of NH, I whole-heartedly endorse the Free State Project and the goals of Freedom and Liberty for all, to which they strive. The spirit of Independence and self-reliance our forefathers had, is alive and eager to join with the aspirations of the FSP. Thank you for choosing NH. – Alan Milner, Exeter, NH, 6/30/04

  5. I was planning the move to my new home in N.H. long before the FSP existed. Having met a number of Free State "porcupines", I expect that they will be very good neighbors - even friends. As a bonus they will help preserve the liberty that we already enjoy (yet sometimes take for granted) with enough left to pass on to the children and the next generation! – John Connell, Salem, NH, 6/30/04

  6. I'm hoping NH will be fertile ground for a return to Federalism, respect for the Constitution, personal responsibility and liberty. Welcome fellow Porcupines. – John Roche, Wilton, NH, 6/30/04

  7. The citizens of New Hampshire, the freest state in the union, welcome the FSP with open arms. We know that you will fit right in with the natural spirit of "live and let live" here. Don't wait. Come now, and together we can make a difference. – John M. Barnes, J. D., Chairman of the Welcome to the Granite State Committee, New London, NH, 6/30/04

  8. I've lived in NH for almost 30 years and welcome the Free Stater's to our great state. NH is a wonderful place to live, raise a family, and work. While I worry about too much growth too quickly to our small state, I think the FSP is a perfect fit for New Hampshire. Enjoy NH and all its natural resources. Live free or die! – KD, Center Harbor, NH, 6/30/04

  9. Welcome everyone to New Hampshire. I have lived here in central NH for over half a century, and love our gruff, granite attitude toward government. We need a bit of government to keep things running smoothly, but I have often voted "NO" when some government legislation aims to get into my wallet again. I'm proud to have NH be chosen as host state for the FSP. – Bill Adams, 6/30/04

  10. It is refreshing for me to know that there are now many more of like mind who yearn for the same freedom that burns within me and I am not alone. I am grateful that the Free State Project will assist in recovering our republic. Such action will lighten my load. I look forward to you all becoming my colleagues for freedom. – State Representative Dick Marple, Hooksett, NH, 6/30/04

  11. Welcome to all porcupines bringing their love of freedom, strength of independence, conviction of equality, and penchant for tolerance by those of us already here. Find the right home, move in and listen, you'll soon know your allies. – Mary Gere, Unity, NH, 6/30/04

  12. As a native of New Hampshire who has traveled a bit, I can safely say that most people are envious of those who call it "home." Our quality of life is what we make it, not what the government dictates. To help preserve this way of life takes a lot of work, and the Free Staters moving to New Hampshire have my support and gratitude in their (our) continuing endeavor. – Stephen J. Bowley, Barrington, NH, 6/30/04

  13. I joined the Free State Project because I feel there is no difference between the two major political parties. We the people of the United States need to take our government back and I welcome the Free State Project to bring change to our state that could eventually spread to the entire country. – John Hanks, Hudson, NH, 6/30/04

  14. Deeply patriotic. Devoted to liberty. Charitable. Politically educated. Hard working in the community. These are the characteristics of fantastic neighbors, Libertarians, and New Hampshire. Welcome home. – Boyd Durkin, Brookline, NH, 7/1/04

  15. I have lived in NH most of my life, and can't see why the rest of the world would live anywhere else. We have a stubborness about us that just cannot be beat and the free staters seem to mirror my thoughts and goals for NH, so come and be just as stubborn as the next damn Yankee. – Elizabeth Becker, Bristol, NH, 7/1/04

  16. I moved to New Hampshire in pursuit of happiness and the American dream. Eventually I was accepted as another person trying to live free and fulfill his dream. So I say to all, freedom begins with freedom of choice to live wherever you choose. What better way to start than by exercising your rights. Welcome to our Free State! – Kevin McConnell, Northfield, NH, 7/4/04

  17. There are two good reasons to leave where you are and come here: (1) A friendly and supportive fellowship to welcome you to the Free State as one of their own, and (2) you'll have more freedom here than where you live now. Don't wait to gain more liberty and community later, when you can have it now in New Hampshire. – Calvin Pratt, Goffstown, NH, 7/9/04

  18. Housing is quite affordable here in Berlin. My advice: don't even wait for the 20,000. If you can, move now to enjoy old New England at its best, with no state income tax. You'll meet lots of people who share your preference for smaller government. – Stephen Villee, Berlin, NH, 7/18/04

  19. I have lived in New Hampshire since I was four years old. We have less government and fewer taxes than any other place in the US. How could I possibly not welcome more like-minded individuals to the Granite State? I think the FSP is a great idea for people who value their freedom, and I certainly am glad that New Hampshire is the state that was chosen. – Shelly Otterson, Keene, NH, 7/18/04

  20. Welcome to the great state of New Hampshire! Although one of the smallest states in the Union, it has so much to offer. Beaches, mountains, lakes, parks, ski areas, hiking trails, fall foliage, and much more. But, as usual, restrictive government puts all of this in danger. So let's all use the FSP to keep this wonderful state free, not only for ourselves, but for our children as well. – Ricky Bennett, Winchester, NH, 7/25/04

  21. As a native NH-ite, I'm thrilled that the FSP selected my state for this experiment in liberty. In many ways, our great country has ceased to be the society envisioned by the Founders, and I, for one, welcome the arrival of anyone who wants to help move government back towards basing decisions about personal freedoms and governmental limitations on the Constitution, and furthering the cause of liberty. We can move mountains by working together, so WELCOME! – Wade Bartlett, Rochester, NH, 7/25/04

  22. Imagine living in a place where you pop the hood on your truck just to check fluid levels, and two or three people stop to offer assistance. Imagine shooting on your backyard range, and your neighbors are just curious about what you're shooting with. Imagine drivers in congested traffic cheerfully letting you merge in and out. Imagine fireworks stores open daily... whether or not there's an upcoming holiday. Imagine polite cops. Imagine living in New Hampshire. – Carl Bussjaeger, Lyndeborough, NH, 7/25/04

  23. I was born in NH in 1957, moved away as a child and moved back in 1979. When I signed up for the FSP I chose my own state for both personal and practical reasons. In my opinion this great granite state offers the most fertile ground for peace loving Free Staters who share my desire for a smaller, less expensive, less intrusive government. WELCOME TO NEW HAMPSHIRE! – Tom Barton, Hooksett, NH, 7/26/04

  24. I moved to New Hampshire 16 years ago when I was only 5 years old. Now, as a twenty one year old, and New Hampshire resident, I would like to welcome anyone who decides/decided to make the move here. With what I lack in experience, I make up for with passion to this country and to this state, and look forward to prosperity with the FSP! – Andrew Gianola, North Conway, NH, 7/26/04

  25. People in New Hampshire are concerned with our state turning into all of the other New England states and their socialist ideology because of the recent influx of residents from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the like. Hearing of Free Staters relocating to our State gives us hope that things may be turning around for our side. You are all welcomed with open arms. – Bryan Clifford, Manchester, NH, 7/29/04

  26. Welcome to New Hampshire, the free-state-to-be! In 1988, we chose to live in the Granite State, not only because it is beautiful and economically dynamic, but specifically because it is (relatively!) free. You'll find you really can have an impact here. We've seen a single vote in "town meetin'" make the difference between more and less intrusive local government. So your hands, your voices, and your hearts are badly needed. Again, welcome! – Brian and Diane Christeson, Berlin, NH, 7/30/04.

  27. As a NH native, I welcome all friends of freedom to the Granite State. You'll find it's a pleasant place to live, work and play. You'll get used to the winter, so don't let that stop you. Keep the rhetoric toned down and be neighborly. If you do this you'll find that the people of this great state will welcome you and your ideas. Good luck and we'll see you here. – Nathan Deleault, Lyme, NH, 8/17/04.

  28. Back in 2001, I was despairing at the way the country was going: five years of Shaheen tax hiking here in New Hampshire, and worse around the country. Then NH was picked. "The reinforcements are coming!" I exclaimed. Now some of these folks are starting to show up, and I find they are some of the best people you could know: solid families, good neighbors, caring citizens. They will be net contributors to your community. – Mike Lorrey, Grantham, NH, 9/17/04.

  29. We have a special spirit in New Hampshire – one of independence, self-reliance, and unlimited possibilities. The members of the Free State Project are coming to support and expand that dream, and to make the Granite State a better place for ourselves, and for our children. – Jim Maynard, Keene, NH 9/22/04.

  30. Welcome to all of you new Granite Staters! Here in New Hampshire, even the porcupines live by the words of New Hampshire's most famous soldier, General John Stark: "Live Free or Die" he said. "Death is not the worst of evils." Thanks for your dedication to the cause. – Dave Maloney, Candia, NH, 9/23/04.

  31. Welcome to New Hampshire – "The Granite State". We are proud you've chosen us as the rock-solid foundation for your Freedom Project. – James R. Mooney, Lancaster NH, 9/25/04.

  32. I moved to New Hampshire in '93 for reasons having nothing to do with freedom, but I was glad that I did. Now I welcome all you others coming here for reaons that do have to with freedom. I'm eager to see what we can all do to preserve and promote the freedom that is the cornerstone of New Hampshire. – R. David Murray, Keene, NH, 9/27/04.

  33. Over my lifetime I've lived in quite a few states, and New Hampshire is definitely the best of the lot. Having relocated here nearly 7 years ago, New Hampshire is my home, and I have discovered a wonderful mix of freedom lovers not to be found in most other places I've lived. So the FSP was a natural for me, and I was quite delighted to see New Hampshire win. Welcome. And let's create the Freedom here that we so crave and desire. – "Freedom Fred" Fred Mitchell, Nashua, NH, 9/27/04.

  34. Hello, and welcome to New Hampshire. My family and I relocated to New Hampshire several months prior to the big vote. We were confident that New Hampshire would be chosen as the "Free State" due to the fact that it is, by far, the state with the most to offer those who wish to preserve liberty. – Stephen G. Nekolek, Littleton, NH, 9/28/04.

  35. Welcome to NH! We recently moved from San Francisco, where we always felt like the state was an uninvited guest in our home and business. It's refreshing to live in a place where the government gets out of your way and lets you live life as you see fit. Help us keep NH the "Live Free or Die" state! – Jenn and Tim Myles, Portsmouth, NH, 9/28/04.

  36. Get a move on, I say! We may have had to make our move decision ahead of the FSP's schedule, but we chose NH for the same reasons. The FSP's decision gives me great hope that freedom-loving folks in "the shire" will not be limited to just preserving the prickly independence of the state... that we can build on that legacy of freedom instead. I hope some of you will choose Milford, too, since I look forward to new friends and neighbors as well as like-minded voters! – Matt Magri, Milford, NH, 9/29/04.

  37. "New Hampshire is the Free State!" So hey, know in advance you are most welcome to join us! Just be sure to bring your working clothes!! – Dave Mincin, Dover, NH, 9/29/04.

  38. I'm thrilled that New Hampshire was selected by the Free State Project. I moved to Portsmouth 5 1/2 years ago from Taxachusetts and am proud to call NH my new home. While campaigning as the Libertarian candidate for U.S.Congress in the first district, I can say with confidence that New Hampshire residents appreciate our respect for individual freedom and personal responsibility. – Dan Belforti, Portsmouth, NH, 9/30/04.

  39. John McGondel here. (NH Mensan by choice, Free-Stater by philosophy and by membership) I moved here in 1987 from Mass. It was the best move I ever made. Glad to see all the rest of you making the move–welcome to the land of the free, where the water tastes fine and the air is good to breathe. We all picked the single best quality state in this union to choose to live in. Good things are coming. – John McGondel, Derry, NH, 9/30/04.

  40. We have started a grand experiment. It will succeed, but we need you. I am optimistic that we will entice enough people to truly make a difference. Just look at the positives NH offers: Fresh air, friendly/helpful neighbors, low crime, no sales tax, no state income tax, and a perfect environment for raising children. It's not perfect now, but with enough people, we'll build a Free State with freedom for all, especially our children. – Ed Kruzel, Pelham NH, 10/04/04.

  41. I am a New Hampshire native and I welcome you! You can't get here fast enough for me. This State has had an influx of liberals in the last ten years and it's having an effect on the political complexion of this state so get here soon. – Tom Kimball, Sanbornton, NH, 10/04/04.

  42. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

To you who are tired of government intrusion into your personal life, poor from working to pay Uncle Sam, huddled masses who fear the Patriot Act, come to New Hampshire. Let this be your refuge. – Kat Dillon, Keene, NH, 10/14/04.

  43. Greetings & Salutations, everyone! NH is a great place to be, c'mon up to visit, and you'll see! (lol, pardon the rhyme) In any case, I've been here for over a year, and am enjoying it; the local area FSP groups are active, as is the NH-LP. Hope to see you here soon! – Denise, Nashua, NH, 10/17/04.

  44. Thank you, Free Staters, for choosing New Hampshire as your new home. New Hampshire needs what you have to offer and has much to offer in return. If freedom can be made to happen anywhere, New Hampshire is the place. Let us all work together to remind America and the rest of the world of the glorious things that can happen when freedom prevails. Do not delay! – George Reich, Barrington, NH, 10/19/04.

  45. Greetings FSP members and friends. I moved to NH from Michigan and am loving my experience. The landscape is beautiful, the people are friendly and the cost of living is very reasonable in most areas. I urge and welcome you all to make the trip here and help make this project an overwhelming success. – Gene Rathka, Laconia, NH, 10/19/2004.

  46. New Hampshire is a great place to live and work. Great opportunities and entertainment are available in abundance. Feel free to contact me. – Steve Ross, Lebanon, NH, 10/24/04.

  47. New Hampshire has always prided itself on the "Live Free or Die" motto. However, today our liberty is being taken away little by little. People are moving North from places like Massachusetts, and destroying our state. They want all the liberal big government and the taxes that go along with it. My wife and I are hard working with two kids, and are struggling to make ends meet with all these new taxes. We are disgusted at the loss of liberty that I fought so hard to preserve while in the military. I just hope that with the Free Staters comes motivated people to help bring this state back to the way it once was. LIVE FREE OR DIE!!!! Welcome and feel free to give me a call. Come over for a BBQ and some brews. – Dave Shaughnessy, 603-893-1831, Derry, NH, 10/28/04.

  48. As a 14th generation New Hampshire-ite, descendant of the 3rd colonial governor and of 3 of the first 8 settlers of New Hampshire, I welcome Free State Project members to New Hampshire. We need your help to keep New Hampshire the "Live Free or Die" state, to reduce the size and power of government, and promote liberty. – Ed Sanders, Lancaster, NH, 11/01/04.

  49. Greetings and welcome to New Hampshire to all incoming Free Staters from a New York transplant who saw a good thing and moved here seven years ago, have increasingly loved it, and knew this was the very best state to choose for the Free State Project. – Roy Shoults, Sr, Manchester, NH, 11/03/04.

  50. I am totally delighted NH was chosen. While no state will be easy to move in the Libertarian direction, there is no doubt in my mind that NH will still be easier than most any other. I am honored and excited that I will soon find myself with more like-minded neighbors. – Larry Smith, Litchfield, NH, 11/03/04.

  51. I would like to welcome everyone who has made, or is considering making the migration to New Hampshire. As a native of this state my entire life, I can attest to the social, economic, political and spiritual value this place has. I look forward to working with you to further improve the quality of life here by echoing our state's motto "live free or die." I further look forward to becoming a role model for change for all states to follow. I bid you all safe journey, and once again, welcome. – Kendall Stapley, Barrington, NH, 11/03/04.

  52. I was born and raised in NH. Many people I know here value freedom, but they are chained to whichever party they lean most towards, or else the "other guy will win". Let's show them a third option. Please don't hesitate to begin your migration here. And be careful to avoid the image that we liberty types are "selfish". We care deeply about other people. That's why we want people to benefit on a large scale from the changes we can create in government. Come on down. – Gregory Arney, Canaan, NH, 11/11/04.

  53. Your liberty-loving activism will go far and be greatly appreciated in NH. While it is certainly a comparatively free state, there is still much work to be done to maintain personal and economic freedoms, while also slowly but surely restoring any freedoms that have been lost over the years. Don't wait - now is the time to help build our momentum. – Dawn Lincoln, Winchester, NH, 11/20/04.

  54. New Hampshire is so much fun! Not just because it's beautiful with lots of things to do...but mostly because here you can do so many creative political things and know that you are making a difference where in other places you would not be. But the best thing about it is the growing, lit-on-fire liberty culture that was already here and is now expanding like a nova. I can't wait till all of you get here! – Dada Orwell, Keene, NH, 11/22/04.

  55. When Data General opened the new plant in Durham NH, I moved up from Austin TX for ONE year to help start up the Tech Pubs Department. There was a job waiting for me in Austin at the end of that year, and I made no move to sell my house and land, because I was going home. That was a little more than 18 years ago. What I found here was incredible beauty, a wilderness freedom, and great warmth – the people, not the climate! My children were safer and freer than they were in Austin (and though they're grown, I still feel that they are safer and freer here), the politics suit me much better, and ... well, there's a reason why NH was chosen for the FSP, isn't there? They've got it right. Sure, there are people who don't understand their rights and freedoms and, as a result, work to destroy them – but so far, they're in the minority. Come help us make sure that they remain in the minority. Welcome to New Hampshire! – Evelyn Logan, Rochester, NH, 11/28/04.

  56. Welcome to New Hampshire! I'm a long time resident (born in NH and lived here all my 32 years) and I love NH! Glad to hear the FSP chose NH as its home. If anyone from the organization needs help, I'd be glad to lend a hand. – Keith Reeder, Nashua, NH, 1/14/05.

  57. Dear FSPers:   I chose to move to NH in 1989 for the same reasons the FSP chose NH. After seeing the influx of people from a certain state to our South, I began to lose hope that NH would keep its reputation for being the most free state in the nation. But when I learned of the FSP I had hope. Now I do all I can to help the newcomers to connect with other like-minded people and groups. I am very impressed with the quality of people that the FSP has attracted and I think they will make a difference over time. – Jane, Bedford, NH, 1/20/05.

  58. New Hampshire welcomes anyone who wants to keep our state free and with so many liberals moving up from Mass we need all the help we can get to balance it out! – L.J. Marble, somewhere in NH, 2/11/05.

  59. I have lived in New Hampshire for 23 years, and I have found it to be a place where the state motto "Live Free Or Die" still has meaning. I welcome all Free Staters, and look forward to making New Hampshire an even more free state. – Mitch McConnell, Brookline, NH, 2/15/05.

  60. Welcome! I am a life-long resident of New Hampshire. I am politically active and know how to run successful campaigns for public office. I would gladly assist any freedom lover in that arena. We, the free natives, need you, the freedom aspirants. We must hold the line now, and even as few as one or two people in each small town can make a huge difference. We don't have enough people (libertarian or otherwise) to run for all open offices. Free Staters can be elected by simply running for unopposed seats. Even if you don't run for office, your votes can help turn many small local tides. I am delighted to have become acquainted with a porcupine who moved to my town, Dawn Lincoln. (See #54.) Come, join Dawn, me and other like-minded individuals already here and already in the process of restoring freedom to one small community. I am currently a selectman and ran for office espousing bold libertarian principles. I am just finishing the first year of a three-year term. For every person welcoming you publicly, there are hundreds quietly awaiting your arrival. – Susan Newell, Winchester, NH (Monadnock Region, Cheshire County) 2/22/05.

  61. As a lifelong MA resident with Libertarian beliefs, I always knew I would move to NH when I could afford to buy a house, because of the freedoms here. Unfortunately, hoards of liberals from my former state have been making the same move and I thought it was only a matter of time before NH became like MA. The FSP has given me new hope. Welcome to New Hampshire! – Eric S, Greenville, NH, 2/28/05.

  62. I was born in NH and have lived here all of my life. I credit FSP movers with helping me understand the ideas of liberty. If you believe in true liberty, I'm only going to ask you one question: Why aren't you here yet? – Jacob Petlon, NH, 19 Aug 2011

  63. I was born and raised in NH and have always valued our state motto, "Live free or die!" I have recently been introduced to the Free State Project and have to say that I am loving it! I have told as many people as will listen to check into this project and show their support as well. Welcome to New Hampshire , thank you for standing up for ALL of our freedoms! – Sarah, Wilmot, NH, 22 Aug 2011.
